Tip > The Golden Rule of Computing
The First Rule of Computing: You create backups often.
The Second Rule of Computing: You create backups often.
The Third Rule of Computing: You create backups often.
Are you getting the "Fight Club" reference? Backing up your data often will save
you time, money and most of all hair
Tip > Free up memory and speed up your computer
Limit the number of programs you are running at any given time. This includes
programs running in the system tray. (The system tray is all the icons to the
left of your clock on the lower right corner of your screen.) You may not realize
it but ALL those programs are running in the background at the same time as
anything else. This takes up valuable system memory.... Screen Savers and Real
Audio/Video are notorious for this.
Tip > Speed up your computer for very little money
Want more speed! Don't buy a new computer...
Buy more RAM! RAM stands for Random Access Memory. There are three main components
that slow or speed up your computer.
> The Processor (ie: Pentium 733)
> The Ram (ie: 128 MB)
> The Operating System.
RAM is relatively cheap and will boost your system performance dramatically.
Going from 128MB to 256MB may only cost $100.00 and double your PC speed and power.
A new processor or Operating System could mean a whole new computer $$$$.
Tip > Eliminate SPAM
Don't you hate SPAM! We do!
The easiest way to NOT get spammed is to NOT give out your email address.
Create an alternate email address at a free email service like Hotmail.com.
When you order something or are required to provide your email address on the
Internet... use the free account. That way IF they sell your email address;
it will go to the free account instead of your daily inbox.
Already overloaded? Consider changing your email address. (Be sure to tell your
friends and family.) Or start trying to remove yourself from lists. Most email
broadcasts will have removal instructions at the bottom of the email.
Don't reply to the messages.... this just let's the spammer know he's got a live one.
Also, be careful forwarding jokes to your entire Address Book!
When you forward the joke it includes everyone's email address. This is OK.
However, when your buddy does the same thing, they include all the email addresses
you just sent them. Once this happens a couple of times, the joke email has 500+
email addresses on it.
Spammers look for emails like these because now they've got 500+ confirmed email
addresses! Kind of scarey to think the email joke you sent to your mother ended up
on a Porn Site list... but this is one of the most common ways you get on a spam list.
Tip > Don't get burned by Viruses
This is an easy tip. Fist, purchase Anti-Virus software!
We like Norton Anti-Virus
(norton.com).
Viruses are most often spread through attachments. So, don't open attachments you
aren't expecting. Delete these immediately and chances are you'll remain virus free!
